Emmy Kubainski joined HeartKids WA as an ambassador in 2016. It was a cause she was keen to be a part of, having suffered from a heart condition herself as a teenager.
She was 16-years-old when doctors discovered she had a hole in her heart the size of a 20 cent coin. She’d unknowingly had the atrial septal defect since birth. It wasn’t found until a routine stethoscope check up by her doctor for asthma picked up an irregular sound. Emmy underwent a two-hour operation which was a success, and now almost 20 years later, she only needs to see a heart specialist every five years.
